The Divinity of Christ
A nowhere-near-exhaustive list of biblical occurrences of prophecy, early church leaders, and even Jesus Himself claiming the divinity and equality of Jesus with God.
Prophecy
Isaiah 7:14
- A child will be born with the name “Immanuel” which means “God with us”
Isaiah 9:6
- The Son is the Father
Gospels
John 1:1-18
- God created the heavens and the earth by speaking them into existence (v. 3)
- Jesus is the Word (v. 1-5)
- The Son is himself God (v. 18)
John 10:24-30
- No one can snatch his sheep from his hands
- Jesus and the Father are one
John 8:58-59
- Jesus identifies himself as God, and the Jews try to stone him for blasphemy
John 20:28
- Thomas calls Jesus his Lord and his God after seeing Him resurrected
Mark 12:35-37
- Jesus quotes David who calls the Messiah his Lord
Mark 14:62
- When asked if he was the Messiah, Jesus responds “I am,” the name of God, and uses the title “Son of Man” to refer to Himself
Early Church
Romans 10:9
- Jesus is Lord, believe in Him to be saved
Philippians 2:5-11
- Jesus is in very nature God
- He humbled Himself, becoming a servant, for our sake
- Because of this, He has been highly exalted
- Every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord!
1 Peter 3:15
- Revere Christ as Lord
Revelation 19:11-16
- Jesus is called “The Word of God”
- The armies of heaven follow his command
- He alone is “King of kings” and “Lord of lords”
Revelation 22:1-5
- “Throne” is singular in Greek (θρόνου) (v. 1)
- “…his servants will worship him” - also singular pronoun αὐτῷ (“him”) (v. 3)
